How to Raise Funds for Fred's Team

Since its inception, Fred's Team has raised $32 million for critical research and treatment initiatives at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. As a Fred's Team member, you are making a serious commitment to raise critical funds for cancer research. In return, Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Fred's Team staff is committed to help you cross the finish line. Funds raised are primarily directed to the Aubrey Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research. If you are interested in designating your funds to another research area, you will have the opportunity to do so.

Getting Started

After registering for an event and selecting a fundraising level, you will receive a personal Web site where your donors can come to make a secure, online donation. You may customize your site with text and photos to inform prospective donors of your upcoming event, send e-mail to friends and family to garner support, and manage/track your progress. By sharing your story with a wide audience, you'll soon reach and exceed your fundraising goal.

The most effective way to fund raise is ask, ask, ask! Team members receive a weekly e-newsletter with creative and proven fundraising ideas. We also have marketing materials describing our program for you to share with supporters. We take your commitment to raise funds very seriously, and are happy to provide additional advice and ideas to help you complete your pledge.

Collecting and Submitting Donations

Visitors may make online donations on a runner's Web page. Online donations are automatically credited toward your pledge and donors receive confirmations from Memorial Sloan-Kettering for tax purposes. Donors may also make donations by check. Checks must include your runner ID number, the appropriate race code, be payable to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and mailed to the following address:

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Attn: Fred's Team
P.O. Box 27432
New York, NY, 10087

Fundraising Deadline Policy

Funds are due two weeks prior to the respective race that you have entered. (Returning Fred's Team members, please note that this deadline is earlier than in previous years.) This deadline is in place to ensure that every runner fulfills his or her fundraising commitment. If funds are not received by the deadline, we reserve the right to cancel your entry with the respective race or marathon.

If you have any questions about the policy, please e-mail us at fredsteam@mskcc.org.

Tax Disclosure

In order to generate as much funding for critical cancer research initiatives as possible, Fred's Team adheres to a strict policy of ensuring at least 80 percent of funds raised benefit the Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Fred's Team staff works individually with runners participating in off-calendar events to develop a fundraising scheme that adheres to this rule. Please contact us at 800-876-7522 for details.

As mandated by the IRS, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is required to provide information regarding money paid on behalf of each participant. Runners, who receive benefits from Memorial Sloan-Kettering (e.g., hotel stay, uniform, meals, transportation etc.) in conjunction with their participation in an event, are required to complete a W-9 Form and will be issued a Form 1099 for benefits exceeding $600 in the calendar year.

For example, if you participate in the New York City Marathon and receive a team uniform, a two-night hotel stay and attend the post-race party, you will receive a Form 1099. If you participate in more than one Fred's Team event in 2008 and receive benefits for multiple races, you will receive one Form 1099 for the total of your benefits. We greatly appreciate your understanding of this mandate and your compliance with this IRS regulation.
